SUMMARY:

Based on self-narratives about the reproductive itineraries of women who have been sterilized or who wish to be sterilized in Southern Bahia, we seek to reflect on the suffering and social constraints for these women's individual decision-making. Until 2018, there were 67,000 surgeries, and of these, only 23% of the surgeries performed by the SUS were performed according to the criteria of the Family Planning Law (CAETANO, 2014). Although the indication that the main desirers and applicants for the procedure are women themselves, it is important to recognize that all personal decisions, by definition, pervade social contexts in which the objective and subjective possibilities of these women are forged. Based on previous studies, this leads us to realize that, in the Brazilian context, reproduction is symbiotically associated with women, in a perverse reduction of moral conduct to sexual conduct. In this way, one pretends to understand what are the sufferings and social constraints for the decision-making of these women. How do these decisions affect your subjectivation processes? Which family, maternity and femininity figures are mobilized at the time of these decisions? What are the family, social, work and institutional participations in your choices?
