SUMMARY:

The presence of indigenous people or original peoples in the narratives concerning the founding of Porto  Seguro, as well as in the speeches that refer to the cultural imagination of its inhabitants, is undeniable. Given this centrality, we sought to understand: what is the place of Afro-descendants in the constitution of Porto Seguro? The research sought to answer this question by investigating the Candomblé terreiros present in the municipality. We carried out documentary and bibliographical research on the topic, developed and applied a questionnaire to leaders, conducted interviews and systematized the data in the light of social cartography as applied by Acselrad (2008) combined with Tedesco (2014) and together with the theoretical bases of Goldman (2015), and Cancela (2012). Partial analyzes of the results suggest the existence of Candomblé terreiros in indigenous villages, which we call Afro-indigenous relationships. But who are these leaders? Were you born here or did you come from other municipalities? When were you introduced to religion? When did your terreiros open? Where are they located? Who are your regulars? What are the challenges and potentialities of the permanence of this religious segment of African origin in indigenous territory? These are some questions that we sought to answer throughout the field research that took place between March 2023 and March 2024.
