SUMMARY:

This thesis sought to present a critical understanding of the socio-environmental diagnosis of the Community Management Council of the Urok Islands (Formosa, Nago and Chediã) based on the analysis of the traditional knowledge process of this community of the Urok Islands. The theoretical approach was based on the framework of Public Policies and Good Living of the socioeconomic experiences of environmental conservation in the Bijagó Archipelago, based on its aspect of community tradition and Guinean modernity. Using the concept of socio-diverse Community Management and its cultural relationship experienced in different ways of knowing the cycles of nature and appropriating, revealing the logic of normalization, creation and operationalization of dominant ethical concepts of traditional environmental knowledge. To carry out the analysis of the Community Management strategies of the Urok Islands, an integration of two typological sets was developed that identify the community management and public policies of this socio-diverse territory and their respective definitions of traditional environmental knowledge, without losing sight of the current threat of deforestation, soil degradation and overfishing. Government initiatives and conservation NGOs in the creation of the National System of Protected Areas are extremely important and crucial for maintaining the lifestyle of these communities. The Urok Islands stand out as a model of community management that lives in symbiosis with nature by respecting both traditional knowledge and science. In a complementary way, we can observe in the globalized world the confrontation of climate change that increasingly overwhelms the capacities of African States, limited by economic and logistical issues. Air pollution and extreme weather events are not yet felt in the archipelago, but little by little they are already disproportionately affecting Guinea-Bissau. Environmental governance requires the integration of Ubuntu ethics, valuing the interdependence and dignity of each individual. In this context, the research proposes to analyze the effectiveness of the ethics of Good Living and Ubuntu in the community institutionalization of public policies in the Urok Islands, with a focus on the preservation of traditional knowledge and sustainability. Using Oral History and Reflective Methodology. It is believed that, at the community and institutional level, the government and NGOs, in their interactive participation together with the holders of this knowledge - community environmental management knowledge, will allow a more adequate appreciation of the preservation of the biological and cultural riches of the archipelago in its new design of public policies for the participation of this community population of the Urok Islands or Guinea-Bissau.
