RESUMO:

This research aims to better understand the relations between political struggle and various manifestations of popular culture. Fieldwork took place primarily in Belmonte, where the Jequitinhonha River reaches the end of its journey from Minas Gerais to Bahia. This is the site of life, work and struggle for the marisqueiras and traditional fishermen of Biela, a neighbourhood in Belmonte, itself in the south of Bahia. The main subject of the research is the Samba de Roda das Marisqueiras. The aim of this work is to investigate the ways in which marisqueiras and sambadeiras musical production aids their political struggles within this traditional community. This dissertation is an invitation to take notice of this samba and bathe in it: using our whole-body. This work was conducted through a direct exchange with Them: Marisqueiras/Sambadeiras from Biela.

In order to assert their rights, gain access to resources and carry out cultural activities such as the Samba de Roda das Marisqueiras, some of these women organised the Association of Belmonte Marisqueiras in 2001, which was reactivated in 2009. In doing so, they sought to resist and speak for themselves in an attempt to stand up against the hierarchies of power relations internal to the modernity/coloniality world system (Grosfoguel, 2008). While writing this letter-dissertation, which was also written by the Marisqueiras/Sambadeiras, we will explore the interspace between this samba de roda, the Association of Belmonte Marisqueiras, their struggles and their community.

The methodology of this dissertation consisted of the following methods: participant observation, participatory action research, method of vadiar and affective writing. It is a research which by design was produced through dialogue between different forms of knowledge. As such, this research also aims to contribute towards one of the objectives of these Marisqueiras/Sambadeiras: the valorization of their samba de roda, principally among their own community. We aim to do so by observing this manifestation of popular culture, its fruits, dynamics, histories and meanings. And by understanding the Samba de Roda das Marisqueiras as a subaltern counterpublic as conceptualised by Nancy Fraser (Perlatto, 2015). This project is aware of the fact that this struggle and this samba are intertwined in a way that favours the communion and resistance of this community through the reinvention of their traditional knowledge of how to exist in a collective form.
