RESUMO:

The BR-101 waterfront in Teixeira de Freitas, BA, has become a housing and social reproduction option for countless people and families who build their homes with various materials, from clay and pieces of wood, cardboard, remnants of building materials. chips of wood, and there they grow crops for subsistence. These people we call, in this work, eaves. In this sense, the research aims to analyze the socioeconomic profile of this population, to understand where they came from, how they survive, what are the reasons that led to occupying the land along the highway and what is the level of access to existing social policies in the country. The methodology used in the research combines quantitative and qualitative methods with the application of socioeconomic questionnaires to 68 families located along 25.7 km of the highway, as well as in-depth interviews and frequent visits to residents' homes. The survey results indicate that these are people from the region who have been excluded from the processes of accumulation and citizenship and who have found the opportunity to gain access to land on the roadside. It is concluded that the eaves are a new type of squatters who live in a situation of extreme social vulnerability, and as a consequence build a sui generismode of view.
