RESUMO:

This paper investigates the social interactions of deaf adults, users of the Brazilian Sign Language, with non-deaf people, in the city of Porto Seguro / BA, Brazil, to understand whether these are established by the latters from the perspective of disability or for the difference. In the first look, the auditory dysfunction is focused, with the deaf being seen as disadvantaged and unable to live fully in society, in this condition. In another perspective, that of difference, cultural and identity traits stand out, with the deaf being treated as completely communicable, capable and sociable subjects. It is an applied research, with a qualitative-exploratory approach, which uses a bibliographic review through predominantly Brazilian scientific productions and the study of the narratives of members of the local deaf community on the subject. Aligns with Deaf Studies, developed in the field of Cultural Studies. In this context, it first addresses contemporary discussions on ways to consider deaf people, discusses how communication in a sign language is related to their social development and explains the main barriers to social interaction between deaf and non-deaf people. In the second stage, interview deaf residents about the receptivity of the non-deaf to them, in some spaces of constant social interaction, such as in the family, at school, at work and in local public or private establishments. Then, from these reports, it analyzes the treatment given by the non-deaf to them, the possible reasons for the receptivity experienced and the implications for the social life of these subjects. We suspect that, because of deafness, they are underestimated as full social beings, suffering from stigmatization and some measure of social isolation. In this way, this research can generate reflections on the sociability of the deaf in the local dynamics and contribute so that the receptivity to deaf people is guided by their recognition and cultural and identity, in this location and beyond.
