SUMMARY:

The research proposal consists of analyzing how peasants perceive, manage and build the landscapes in their territorialization efforts through land occupations in the south and southeast of Pará, decades after the arrival of an exogenous peasant front in the conflictive context of the capital expansion border. I start from the hypothesis that, despite the possible environmental impacts of their activities, peasants still maintain the multispecies character of the landscapes, without pushing them to the limit as some of their main antagonists, landowners and mining companies, do. I assume that people link landscape to environmental integrity, developing and putting into practice strategies for the rehabilitation of landscapes, when faced with degraded environments, and maintaining those that are intact, because they know that the care required in this sense contributes to ensuring their permanence in the territories in which they build their ways of life, whose viability does not depend only on economic and ecological parameters, but also on aesthetic and political ones. The research is being conducted in João Canuto, in Tucuruí, and Frei Henri, in Curionópolis, both in the state of Pará, through interviews with the occupant families and participation in management activities developed by them, in addition to the analysis of satellite images time series and secondary data collection in public institutions and non-governmental organizations operating in the region. I hope this research will contribute to the understanding of peasant strategies for managing landscapes, which are severely threatened in the region by the uninterrupted expansion of large-scale economic activities that synergistically have amplified their deleterious impacts.
