SUMMARY:

The Pataxó people have been undertaking, since the mid-twentieth century, a project to establish their cultural canons, based on a political, artistic, linguistic, historical and economic movement called Cultural Affirmation. Through it, a growing and elaborate repertoire of symbols, practices, behaviors, knowledge and diacritics of the Pataxó ethnicity has been reconstructed in order to shape and establish the Pataxó Culture. Allied to the retaking of territories and the resumption of culture, it is also important to highlight - given that we all have bills to pay and with most indigenous people it would not be different - the resumption of commerce as a contemporary strategy to be self-sufficient and live well; in the Pataxó case, viver sossegado. Based on this premise, this thesis project with an ethnographic approach aims to investigate Pataxó Entrepreneurship, a rising phenomenon since the late 1990s, as an analytical category with its own logic. If the ideological basis of Entrepreneurship is neoliberalism, Indigenous Entrepreneurship, on the other hand, seems to be based on indigenous economies, configuring a possible device for the self-determination of indigenous peoples. That said, the central question that guides the work is: to what extent does indigenous people identity, especially in the current moment of Cultural Affirmation, influence the entrepreneurial performance of Pataxó people? And vice versa: we are also interested in understanding how indigenous entrepreneurial activities contribute to the acknowledgment of the Pataxó identity. The setting of the ethnographic research is the Coroa Vermelha, the largest urban indigenous village in Brazil, a place of historical reference and outstanding economic importance of the so-called Costa do Descobrimento where the Pataxó, to sustain their traditional ways of life, are designing their own entrepreneurial strategies. Ethnotourism ventures such as Reserva da Jaqueira and Aldeia Txag'ru Mirawê are examples already established in demonstrating the resilience of Pataxó entrepreneurs and their ability to transmute resistance movements into opportunities for entrepreneurship, pointing to the emergence of a new form of capital, the ethnic-racial . The research will be supported by an exhaustive review of the international literature on the subject, whose state of the art will support our insertion in this field of studies still unexplored in Brazil. It is expected, with the results of this work, to know the specificities and characteristics of Pataxó Entrepreneurship and its strategies to counter colonization of territory, goods and commerce in the sense of sustainable self-management; and finally, to contribute to the advancement of research in Indigenous Entrepreneurship from a counter-colonial perspective and indigenous epistemologies, as an alternative to the hegemonic neoliberal and ultra-conservative conceptual paradigm of the field of Entrepreneurship in Brazil.
