SUMMARY:

The concept of art appears to be somewhat complex. If one takes a sectoral look towards society, it becomes evident that art is an integral part and directly influential in various segments. With significant importance in the production of knowledge, in the expression of peoples, in the development of aesthetics, and, according to the most up-to-date readings, also in contemporary economics, as the creative economy is globally recognized as a significant market. The Teatro Popular de Ilhéus (TPI), a group founded in the southern region of Bahia in 1995 by actor and director Équio Reis, does not escape this logic. Born as a theatrical group, that gathering of artists has evolved into a broad cultural movement, polarizing gatherings and engaging with the people and organized civil society, actively interfering not only in the expression of the "grapiúna" being, not only in the aesthetics of local art, but also in the articulation of public policies, in economic activity, in the production of formal and informal knowledge, and in the political game of public administration. What began as an intimate relationship with communities also began to respond to calls for proposals and engage in close dialogue with the government, educational institutions, and the third sector. Understanding how the management of art's interaction with the state affects the forms of representation is a key point of interest in this research. Understanding the work of the Teatro Popular de Ilhéus in its connections with the state means a better understanding of the structure of society in southern Bahia. The aim here is to understand the links between the artistic and social production of the group with the processes of identifying the "ilheense" being. This "ilheense" individual engages directly with the work of the Teatro Popular de Ilhéus, which is largely born through dialogue with the "real" characters that make up the region. The practice of the Teatro Popular de Ilhéus, as a group action, reflects a defined worldview. Group practice emerges as a form of interaction of art with its audience, with the society that accommodates it, with the state that governs it. Identities affect and are affected by the continued artistic production of the group theater. It is art guided by the ideal of encounter, exchange, and interaction. Group theater, the theater produced by the Teatro Popular de Ilhéus, refers to the community. Here, we seek to ascertain how much of the identity of this "grapiúna" territory is expressed in the dramatic texts and performances of the Teatro Popular de Ilhéus. Understanding the influence of the existence of artistic work and the social interactions of the group in the processes of identification, in the processes of forming the "ilheense being," is the focus of this research.
