SUMMARY:

Tourism, seen as a social and human phenomenon, can be observed from different perspectives. Given this premise, this study proposes, through an anthropological approach, to highlight the transformations of tourist activity in a historical path with special interest in the events of the last decades of the 20th century when discussions around the theme of sustainability applied to tourism created the foundations for the emergence of community tourism. Since then, Community Tourism has presented itself as a phenomenon with its own configurations, which has become increasingly present in rural and urban communities, with emphasis on the pioneering spirit of communities in Latin America that have been organizing around this practice. Given this context, through an ethnographic approach and from an Afro-centered perspective, this thesis project aims to investigate the relationship between Community Tourism and the way of life of these rural and urban communities. So, while conventional tourism is based on competitiveness, profit and the maximum exhaustion of resources, community tourism has as its pillars solidarity, the appreciation of local history and culture, the conservation of biodiversity and community protagonism. Thus, tourist activity is used by community actors precisely as a tool to confront and transform the territory in accordance with the bases and principles of the local community. Thus, the main research question revolves around “How does the practice of tourism relate to the ways of life of communities that are part of the BATUC Network - Bahia Community Tourism?”. The setting and subjects of this investigation are the communities that make up the BATUC Network - Bahia Community Tourism, an autonomous articulation at the state level that, since 2015, has been developing collective actions in favor of organizing and strengthening Community Tourism in the state of Bahia. Bahia. The research will be based on a review of the literature on the topic, in order to contextualize the field of research and also on studies that help to understand the emergence of the topic. The results of this work are expected to contribute to expanding the range of studies in the area of tourism, as well as consolidating new visions in its field of teaching and research. In order to provide opportunities for the creation and implementation of strategies for the implementation, development and evaluation of this practice, especially in the context of the region studied.
