SUMMARY:

Recent research suggests a possible interference of SARS-CoV-2 with the Central Nervous System, potentially linked to cognitive process alterations reported by infected patients. The areas most affected by SARS-CoV-2 include the neocortical layers of the temporal lobe and subcortical structures like the hippocampus. The hippocampus is widely recognized in the literature for its role in mnemonic processes, such as learning and the recall of declarative memories, including semantic and episodic types. It is also known that the hippocampus plays a crucial role in the limbic structures that regulate emotion and behavior. Clinical findings related to long COVID indicate that changes in neurophysiological patterns in this area may correlate with cognitive, emotional, and behavioral alterations, particularly in mnemonic disturbances, information processing speed, and mental manipulation of stimuli. In this context, we evaluated the performance of a group of participants who experienced symptomatic COVID-19, those who were hospitalized with COVID-19, and a control group of individuals not exposed to the virus. We assessed neuropsychological processes such as learning, memory, automatic and controlled attention processes, as well as emotional and behavioral changes using a psychiatric symptom screening scale. Our preliminary data have shown impairments in both short-term and long-term memory recall, as well as in information processing speed and controlled processes.
