SUMMARY:

In the current context, pressure on ecosystems has increased due to constant population growth, which has
generated an unsustainable demand for resources and significant environmental challenges, especially in the
management of municipal solid waste. The city of Villa El Salvador, located in Lima - Peru, was immersed in this
challenge, with an annual population growth of 1.2%, which increased the generation of municipal solid waste and
raised questions about the effectiveness and sustainability of the management system then in place. This research
sought to contextualize waste management in Villa El Salvador, considering both the direct impact of population
growth and the wider implications of sustainable development.
The study focused on evaluating the solid waste management system in Villa El Salvador, Lima - Peru, using
the Waste Wise Cities Tool Methodology, a tool developed by UN-HABITAT to help cities address the challenges
associated with solid waste management through indicator SDG 11.6.1. To carry out the study, municipal reports
and statistical records were consulted, and direct interviews and data collection were carried out in the field. The
results were presented and analyzed, comparing them with the established standards and targets.
The results obtained and their analysis will allow us to make recommendations and highlight the importance of waste management in Villa El Salvador and a contribution to the knowledge on environmental sustainability. The information obtained by this study could be used as a tool for the planning and evaluation of public policies aimed at the management of solid waste in the city of Villa El Salvador and in other cities. In this way, it is expected to optimize public expenditure, as well as the promotion of concrete actions such as training of authorities, acquisition of new technologies, creation of programs, among others, contributing to the sustainable
development of the country and adequate management of solid waste.
