RESUMO:

Sanitation represents an essential instrument for maintaining environmental quality, well-being and human health and the study of environmental perception can provide instruments to overcome impasses related to this theme, since it provides an awareness of the problems related to the lived environment. Thus, recognizing the lack of information about sanitation issues in the study area, the investigation presented aims to analyze the environmental perception of residents of Caraíva (BA) regarding sanitation, with a view to contributing with information that can subsidize education and environmental management programs and strategies, aiming to collaborate with health, quality of life and sustainable development of the local population. For this, interviews were conducted with open and closed questions with 77 residents of residential and mixed-use properties and participating observations between the months of November 2019 and March 2020 only in the historic village of Caraíva. The results are presented from two articles, the first presents the health conditions of Caraíva and the assessment of environmental quality by its residents and the second aims to identify and analyze the perception of residents regarding sanitation problems, as well as, responsibilities and expectations. As a preliminary result, it was found that the Caraíva district has many unnatural residents while the natives are in neighboring areas. The village has poor sanitation, whose problems are accentuated by the fluctuating population resulting from tourism. In addition, it is possible to conclude that residents are able to identify aspects that negatively influence the environment due to inadequate sanitation, and they attribute to the government the responsibility for undertaking the necessary improvements, whether through infrastructure or educational and awareness-raising intervention
