RESUMO:

The work aims to understand the socio-environmental educational actions of the Pataxó Indigenous School of Reserva da Jaqueira (Porto Seguro, BA), trying to correlate them with the concept of Critical Environmental Education. The education cited here is based on the concepts and praxis of education developed by Paulo Freire (1967), as can be seen in Education as a Practice of Freedom. Using participant observation and the field diary as the main method for data collection, the classes of the multi-grade classes of Elementary School of the morning and afternoon period were followed on two days of the week during the period from April 23 to December 10, 2019 during the course of classes while the researcher assisted teachers in their activities. Complementing the participant observation and the field diary, the content of the Pataxó indigenous literary production found in the school library and used by teachers and students for reading activities was interpreted. Thus, for the production of the analysis, the data found in the indigenous literature, in the observations made in the field and recorded in the diary were correlated with the theoretical references representative of Critical Environmental Education. In addition, as part of the analysis, the Matrix For Evaluation of Environmental Education Projects developed by Profa. Dr. Alessandra Buonavoglia Costa-Pinto. From these analyzes it was possible to notice that the activities of the Pataxó Indigenous School of Reserva da Jaqueira have characteristics of Critical Environmental Education in most of its actions inside and outside the classroom, being characterized as emancipatory, as well as interdisciplinary. They constantly return to socio-environmental and cultural issues in their activities, promoting critical discourse for the strengthening and permanence of indigenous culture, explaining and debating issues such as environmental management, plant recognition, Pataxó graphics, use of natural materials, strengthening the group through robes and rituals, storytelling, music, teaching Patxohã (Pataxó language), maintaining culture and the group through teaching passed from generation to generation, among so many other means that characterize school teaching as a driver for the development of societies sustainable.
