RESUMO:

This study presents a scientometric analysis of scientific articles that investigated the contamination of abiotic natural compartments by toxic metals from solid waste in landfills and landfills, in the period from 2000 to 2019. The objective of this study was to verify the temporality of scientific production about the subject in question, in addition to observing the most studied natural compartments and metals and the location of the studied environments and ascertaining the evolution of production on this theme in Brazil after the implementation of the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS). The recovery of productions was made through the Web of Science platform (Institute for Scientific Information - ISI), looking for works that contained the terms "metal", "municipal solid waste", "contamination", "water", "soil" , “Sediments”, “land”, “lixão” and “landfill” in the body of the text, the terms “metal”, “lixão”, “landfill” and “lixão” in the titles and the terms “landfill”, “Water”, “soil”, “sediment”, “earth” and “dump” in the abstracts, in addition to some variations of the terms “metal *”, “water *” and “dump *”. The search resulted in a total of 701 articles, of which 178 were selected. It was found that there was a trend towards an increase in the number of publications over the years, mainly after 2008. Most of the articles were of a diagnostic nature (95.51%), while a minority was of a mitigatory nature. The mitigation studies were published from 2016 to 2019. It was also observed that most studies investigated the presence of toxic metals in the soil (66.29%), individually or in combination with other matrices, and that the most researched metals were lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni), mentioned in more than 60% of the works. The largest of the published works was developed in Nigeria, on the African continent (N = 28). Brazil published only seven (N = 7) studies on the topic in the analyzed period. Studies on the presence of toxic metals in soil, water and sediments from garbage deposits and adjacent areas are of great relevance, since to adopt measures to restore degraded areas it is necessary to know the state of the environment. In addition, they demonstrate the importance of processes such as selective collection and recycling of solid waste, to prevent the arrival of contaminants such as metals in the environment. The increase in the production of studies on this topic shows that the concern about the consequences of the inadequate deposition of this waste has been growing.
