RESUMO:

Zooplankton communities monitoring is a powerful tool to identify environmental changes and contributes to the biodiversity conservation on a global scale due to its trophic importance. The Copepoda is the most abundant zooplankton group and its diversity, short life cycle and broad feeding strategy make this group a good environmental bioindicator. The Buranhém River mouth is in Porto Seguro at the South of Bahia making it the main river of this city. This study purpose is to identify the spatial dynamics of the mesozooplanktonic community focusing on Copepoda, to identify its transport mechanism and the influence of the Buranhém River to the reef and inner shelf adjacent areas of the coast. This research project contains two main chapters. The first chapter describes aspects of the spatial variation between the three different environments in this study (estuary, reef and shelf). The second chapter is about the influence of the Buranhém River plume on the zooplankton transport to the nearby coast communities. The total of sixty-five samples was collected from the Buranhém River plume, around the Natural Municipal Park of the Recife de Fora, on the inner shelf nearby Porto Seguro and by the coast of Arraial d’Ajuda. The zooplankton samples were obtained through vertical hauls with simple conical plankton net with 200 µm mesh and preserved on formaldehyde with final concentration of 4%, to future lab identification. The vertical profiles of temperature and salinity were obtained with a CTD, and the euphotic zone were estimated by Secchi disk depth. The Rive’s plume, the inner shelf and Arraial d’Ajuda’s coast samplings relied on drifters to define its superficial hydrodynamics characteristics and to calculate the mesozooplankton instantaneous transport. The oceanographic parameters variations and the influence of the Buranhém River estuary flow on the structure of the coast mesozooplankton community is an important contribution to the comprehension of the pelagic ecology, providing information to the future public policies to preserve this area. Additionally, the taxonomic analysis will allow the first mesozooplankton list of species, with emphasis on Copepoda, to the Porto Seguro coast and adjacent areas.
