SUMMARY:

Many waterways have been used for water treatment and supply for human consumption. However, they are recipients of treated or untreated sewage and have been a cause for concern about the contamination of water sources. The progressive increase in the presence of pharmaceuticals in water supplies represents one of the world's problems in relation to compromising the quality of water for human consumption and aquatic environments, as they are not eliminated in conventional sewage treatment plants. The Mangues River is the current source of drinking water supply, used by the Empresa Baiana de Água e Saneamento (EMBASA). Taking into account the importance of the river for the city, together with the urban growth in its surroundings, this work aims to analyze the occurrence of drugs as emerging contaminants and water quality parameters in a public water supply in order to assess the anthropogenic effects and the state of degradation of the river. For the determination of the drugs diclofenac, 17 β-estradiol and caffeine, the solid phase microextraction method (SPME) will be developed and validated. The quantification will be done by the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD) method. For the collection and storage of samples, the procedures provided by the National Guide for Collection and Preservation of Samples (Cetesb, 2011) will be adopted. To identify and quantify the presence of caffeine, diclofenac and 17 β-estradiol in environmental samples, the experimental work will be divided into three steps: 1st step development and optimization of an analytical method for the identification and quantification of the analytes of interest; 2nd step will consist in the validation of the method used and in the 3rd step surface water samples from the Mangrove River will be analyzed. The analytical figures of merit will be: linearity, limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (QL). With the results obtained, it is hoped that they can help in the mitigation of public policies for the preservation and protection of the river. To guarantee the life of this watercourse threatened by degradation due to land use and occupation, agricultural and urban issues. Contribute to studies of emerging pollutants as indicators of anthropic contamination. Development of in situ and in loco detection techniques of emerging pollutants in a water supply source. The results may provide technical and scientific bases for the improvement of sanitation policies, creating guidelines for the prevention and control of pollution.
