TITLE:

Pollen Atlas of the South Bahia Atlantic Forest Botanical Garden (JB FLORAS)

KEY WORDS:

pollen grain; pollen morphology; palynology; Atlantic Rain Forest

PAGES: 50
BIG AREA: Outra
AREA: Ciências Ambientais
SUMMARY:

In Bahia, studies on pollen morphology have been growing in recent decades. In areas of Atlantic Rain Forest, such studies are still scarce, despite this biome presenting a high plant biodiversity, representing about 36% of the Brazilian flora. Thus, this work is aimed at characterizing the morphopollinic diversity of plant species in the Atlantic Rain Forest remnant of the Jardim Botânico da Floresta Atlântica Sul-Baiana (JB FLORAS), in Porto Seguro (BA). For this, flower buds have been collected in the exsiccates deposited in the Herbarium Prof°. Geraldo C. P. Pinto (GCPP), referring to the previous floristic survey carried out in the garden, which revealed 193 species distributed in 53 families. The pollen material collected is acetolyzed; the pollen grains are measured, described and photodigitized under optical microscopy. The studies of the pollen flora of this area started with the most diverse family in the floristic survey, Leguminosae, with 34 species, 13 of which with pollen material available for analysis, representing the genera Alysicarpus Desv., Chamaecrista (L.) Moench, Crotalaria L. , Desmodium Desv., Andira Lam., Cajanus Adans., Centrosema (DC.) Benth., Mucuna Adans., Paubrasilia (Lam.) Gagnon, H.C.Lima & G.P.Lewis, and Senna Mill.. The analyzed plant species present pollen grains in monads, medium-sized; shape from prolate to subprolate; amb triangular; 3-colpate and reticulate exine. It is expected to finalize the descriptions of this family and include other significant families of the garden to compose this work. The pollen atlas will subsidize research in Palynology and related areas in the extreme south of Bahia and in the Atlantic Rain Forest biome, and will expand knowledge about the plant biodiversity of these poorly studied areas, contributing to the development of strategies for their conservation. The research will also expand the palinoFLORAS pollen library, the JB FLORAS palynological collection.
