SUMMARY:

Understanding environmental beliefs and how people relate and connect with nature allows us to infer whether a given individual has a disposition to pro-environmental behaviors, is concerned with environmental issues and with the future consequences of his/her actions on nature. Thus, this work investigates the ecological affinity profile of youth from 15 to 18 years old about the Atlantic Rain Forest, in order to understand the environmental beliefs of these youth, their connection with nature and how they perceive the future consequences of their actions for this biome. The field research was carried out with 339 high school students in Eunápolis/Bahia State. Data collection included four scales: Inclusion of Nature in the Self, Scale of Connection with Nature; Consideration of Future Consequences; and Forest Values, in addition to a socioeconomic questionnaire. These scales were submitted to descriptive, inferential, exploratory factor analysis and similarity structure analysis in SPSS, Factor and JASP softwares. Participants were 326 youth who declared to be cis/trans man (N=127, 39.1%), cis/trans woman (N=187, 57.5%) or non-binary (N=11, 3.4%). The psychometric instruments presented the following metrics: Inclusion of Nature in the Self: (Me = 4.3; Mo = 4.0; Dp = 1.56; s2 = 2.45); Nature Connection Scale: Bartlett's sphericity (1140.1, gl = 78, p < 0.001), and KMO (0.77); Future Consequences Consideration Scale: Bartlett's sphericity (823.1, gl = 66, p < 0.001), and KMO (0.71); and Forest Values Scale: Bartlett's sphericity tests (848.0 gl = 28, p < 0.001), and KMO (0.71). The preliminary association of the instruments indicates that youth are connected to nature, aware of their actions on the environment and consider the Atlantic Rain Forest important for having a rich biodiversity that needs to be cared for and preserved.
