SUMMARY:

Disasters are events that can disrupt the functioning of a city, community, or country, impacting daily life and exceeding the population's capacity to recover on their own. These events are commonly referred to as "natural disasters" as they originate from geological, meteorological, hydrological, or climatological events. Currently, the majority of disasters occurring worldwide are the result of complex interactions between natural phenomena and imbalances in ecosystems, primarily influenced by human activities such as environmental degradation, irregular occupation of high-risk areas, and lack of urban planning. To understand the causes and factors associated with a disaster, it is crucial to have a clear and objective definition of the concept of natural disasters and to understand their genesis, including the triggers that initiate the event and the assessment of the resulting damages. However, there are few available instruments to understand the risk scenario that combine data and information on hydro-meteorological phenomena along with the behavior of arboviruses before, during, and after disasters. The objective of this research is to analyze the relationship between the occurrence of natural disasters recorded in municipalities in the Extreme South of Bahia and the emergence of dengue, chikungunya, and zika cases from 2013 to 2022. This is an ecological study of multiple groups, which allows the use of data on entire populations or groups of people to compare the frequency of diseases or other effects among different groups during the same period of time or in the same population at different times. In the context of Environmental Sciences, this research will contribute to stimulating discussions and improving the understanding of the relationship between health and the environment, assisting the responsible authorities in reflecting on the territorial dimensions of disasters, an aspect that is still not widely explored. This highlights the need for scientific production in this field.
