SUMMARY:

Microplastic (PM) has recently emerged as one of the most worrying pollutants due to its size (less than 5mm in diameter) and large-scale contamination in environments. Our objective was to evaluate which aquatic macroinvertebrates absorb MP; how MP is accumulated in organisms; and where (in which part of the body) the MP is found. As a study model, macroinvertebrates found naturally in phytotelmata of bromeliads (Aechmea blanchetiana) were used. The volume of bromeliads was collected and distributed in 45 flasks, 15 per treatment. Each flask received 50 ml of the collected volume with the addition of “glitter” microplastic, in two concentrations, T1 and T2, and the control, which received no treatment. The samples were kept in a B.O.D. with light/dark photoperiod of 10/14 hours and 23°C (±1) for one month and every seven days 10 ml was collected. The organisms were sorted, clarified, mounted on microscope slides, and tolerated in an oven for drying. The occurrence of microplastic, size categorization, and its location in the individuals, was analyzed in an optical microscope and the results compared by Chi-square (Software R). Organisms from 4 taxa were collected and identified: Chironomidae (57), Culicidae (122), Ostracoda (95) and Psychodidae (22), with PM found in respectively 99%, 97%, 73% and 67% of the individuals. We observed variation in the size of the PM found in each group, with 87% of the Chironomidae having PM of the fragmented type, in Culicidae particulate and fragmented PM were found together, in 45% of Ostracoda and 57% of Psychodidade particulate PM was found. In all taxa the digestive tract was the region of the body where MP was most found, in Culicidae MP was also found in significant amounts in the thorax, tracheal head tubes. Thus, we conclude that the type of PM and the region of the body where it is found vary according to the organisms, being probably influenced by the type of eating habits and behavior.
