SUMMARY:

Spaces and play in nature have a significant impact on children's health and well-being, with cognitive benefits identified by various studies. School spaces that include nature or provide experiences with natural elements and other greener educational territories favor sensitive experiences for children, rich in senses, bonds and discoveries. Regarding the importance of play and contact with nature for children's development, this study relies on the following central question: What is the role of nature in the play and play spaces for children aged 4-6 in a school context? We hypothesize that nature and its biophysical elements occupy a central place in children's play and perception of play spaces. This is a qualitative, descriptive and observational study. The study site, selected for convenience, consists of a private school in Porto Seguro (Bahia State) which has spaces and biophysical elements of nature, and an open courtyard. The study subjects will include at least 20 children aged between 4 and 6, regardless of gender, regularly enrolled at the chosen school. Data collection will include free observation of the school's routine, with field diary entries; observation and analysis of children's interaction in the play spaces and focus groups using photographs of the school space. Data analysis will include descriptive analysis from the field diary, for the observations, and content analysis, using Maxqda software, for the verbal data from the focus groups. We hope that the results will contribute to discussions about nature spaces for play in the school environment.
