SUMMARY:

The Environmental Protection Area (EPA) of Santo Antônio is a Sustainable Use Conservation Unit established by State Decree No. 3.413/1994. Its objective is to conserve the coastal ecosystem that extends from the mouth of the João de Tiba River to the mouth of the Jequitinhonha River, encompassing the municipalities of Santa Cruz Cabrália and Belmonte/BA. The EPA of Santo Antônio is managed by the Institute of Environment and Water Resources of the State of Bahia (INEMA) and has a management plan dating back to 1996. A consultative Management Council (MC) was established on 10/20/2022 by Ordinance No. 27.202/2022, composed of representatives from public agencies, civil society, and local entrepreneurs. A key strategy for strengthening the MC is the expansion and consolidation of Environmental Education (EE), which encourages deep reflections on the urgent need for transformation and supports the construction of knowledge capable of promoting and enhancing societal participation. EE also helps in the integrated understanding of the environment and its multiple and complex relationships, including ecological, political, social, economic, historical, cultural, ethical, and pedagogical aspects. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the results of the environmental education process initiated with the members of the MC of the EPA of Santo Antônio, aiming to promote an ethical awareness of local socio-environmental issues. To achieve this, a qualitative action research was conducted. Initially, documental and bibliographic analyses were carried out, along with a review of the relevant legislation. Additionally, there was active participation in the MC plenaries of the EPA of Santo Antônio, with the aim of making observations and jointly developing a socio-environmental understanding of the territory, emphasizing the role of environmental education and participatory management. Subsequently, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the council members, and the information recorded in the field diary and in the minutes of the plenaries held between December 2022 and July 2024 was analyzed. Discursive textual analysis was also carried out by unifying the statements from the semi-structured interviews to generate units of meaning based on the captured understandings. Finally, the data triangulation technique was used to integrate and analyze all the collected information. It is hoped that the results will contribute to strengthening participatory management in the EPA of Santo Antônio
