RESUMO:

The research analyzes which elements and historical factors contributed to the introduction of the cult to São Benedito in the community named after him, this one, located in the vicinity of the Remaining Community of Quilombola Helvécia, in the extreme south of the state. Among the issues, I analyze how the cult of the Saint unfolded in festive celebrations in which the samba to São Benedito can be understood as a fundamental part of the demonstrations of zeal, faith and devotion to the patron saint of the community. The text presents aspects of history, social structure and some daily practices of the community. In the research, I seek to identify the origins, stories and memories related to São Benedito, both those around religious worship and those related to festive worship based on samba in his honor. This is present in a set of celebrations that involve social, political, ideological, economic and cultural factors in the community. The discussion that this text intends to carry out is - presenting a history of the cult of São Benedito - how the festive cult of the Saint enables the conjunction of several aspects related to devotion, religiosity and entertainment, bringing together popular narratives that allow us to better understand aspects of history and the culture of black rural communities in Bahia.
