SUMMARY:

Working with literature requires, first of all, some reflection on the very concept of what literature is, its scope and possible functions. Initially understood only as an artistic manifestation, literature goes much further, serving as a record of an era, a people, cultures and ideologies, or also as a tool for criticism and social denunciation of what is seen as missing or problematic in society. In this way, Afro-Brazilian literature emerges as a synthesis of all these characteristics, because through it we have a sensitive and credible vision of the history of a people historically marginalized even within traditional literature itself. Therefore, in line with our objective of contributing to the use of literature to build an anti-racist education, we chose to establish the concept of literature, (Culler ,1995), (Eagleton,1997), (SOUZA, 2000) to discuss how the afro-brazilian literature (Duarte, 2008), (PROENÇA FILHO, 2010), (EVARISTO, 2011), and analyze a work representative of this aspect, (Ponciá Vicêncio), in order to understand how the black individual is represented in these works. Armed with this analysis and aware of the need to include black-referenced content in the limited curriculum of high school literature classes, we chose to develop a paradidactic guide based on this and other works that deal with the same theme, containing proposals for reading, reflection and complementary activities to be developed in literature classes.
