SUMMARY:

The cropping systems and management practices in each type of soil affects directly and indirectly the amount and quality of soil organic matter (SOM). Considering the great importance of integrated cropping systems for the sustainable development and environmental improvement, this study aimed to evaluate the microbial attributes, and to quantify the chemical and physical fractions of SOM in five land-use systems in a Cerrado area of East Maranhão. Soil samples were collected at Barbosa Farm, Brejo, Maranhão, in 5 distinct land-use systems: (i) exclusive no-tillage in the soybean/millet succession (SPD), (ii) livestock-forest integration (IPF), (iii) crop-livestock integration (ILP), (iv) crop-forest integration (ILF), and (v) an area under native Cerrado (CN). Samplings were performed in areas with representative plots of 1.0 ha (100 x 100 m). In each system, 1.0 x 1.0 x 1.0 m and 0.60 x 0.60 x 0.60 pits were dug, randomly distributed at a distance of 50 m between each other. In July 2022, four disturbed soil samples were collected in the following soil layers: 0.0-0.10; 0.10-0.20; 0.20-0.30; 0.30-0.40; 0.40-0.60; 0.60-0.80 and 0.80-1.00 m. Total soil organic carbon (TOC) and fractions, and soil microbial attributes at the 0.0-0.10 m soil layer were measured. The data were analyzed through the confidence interval and multivariate analysis. The IPF system presented highest concentration of microbial biomass carbon, TOC, mineral-associated carbon, fulvic acids, humic acids, humin, and carbon compartment index, compared to the other land-use systems. The livestock-forest integration established for a period of five years is able to reach a new equilibrium state regarding TOC contents, that is superior to that observed for soybean under no-tillage for 17 years of use. The humic fractions discriminate more sensitively the management systems evaluated, regarding soil organic matter.
