SUMMARY:

The effects of global warming and climate change are felt and perceived increasingly clearly and generate environmental, social and economic consequences. The increase in global temperature, extreme weather events, rising sea levels, loss of biodiversity, water scarcity and changes in the well-being of humanity are the results of the intensification of the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, through changes in the energy matrix and reducing deforestation, is necessary. Furthermore, it is necessary to remove part of the gases that have already been emitted into the atmosphere. Carbon credit projects represent an economic instrument capable of containing deforestation and removing carbon from the atmosphere, financially rewarding the actors involved. Taking into account the predominantly forested landscape of the southern region of Bahia, its rich biodiversity and sociodiversity, this work aims to analyze the feasibility of generating carbon credits in the southern region of Bahia, considering the reality of the Una river basins and Almada. This general objective is subdivided into the following specific objectives: analyze scientific production related to forestry carbon credit projects in Brazil; identify the determining vectors for the transformation of the forested landscape in the region; analyze the dynamics of land cover and use from 1986 to 2021; raise the carbon stock potential, and; analyze the application of eligibility criteria for carbon credit projects in the Almada and Una river basins. In this sense, this work seeks to answer the following question: What are the possibilities for generating forest carbon credits in Southern Bahia? Based on this guiding question and the general objective, the specific objectives are worked on individually and presented in chapters. In this way, the thesis will be structured into four chapters, the first two of which are part of this qualification text. The first chapter presents an analysis of scientific production on forest-based carbon credit projects in Brazil. It demonstrates the concentration of research in the Amazon region and that there is room for research in other biomes and states. The second analyzes the dynamics of land cover and use in the Southern Coastal Territory of Bahia and presents the vectors of landscape transformation in this territory. This work presents the temporal evolution of the reduction of forested landscape and explains that this fact is directly related to cocoa production in the Cabruca system. The third chapter, which is being finalized, demonstrates the carbon stock potential in a cocoa production area in the region, considering the land cover and use classes and biomass data for the classes considered. The fourth chapter will be worked on after qualification.
