SUMMARY:

Brazil's extensive territorial area is described by biological diversity - through its rich biomes; and cultural - the result of a confluence of knowledge originating from different peoples who settled in this territory throughout history. With its biodiversity and high degree of devastation, the Atlantic Forest biome is the focus of several studies, which seek to understand the complexity of its ecological dynamics. Direct and indirect human action on this biome, over hundreds of years, resulted in a significant loss of vegetation cover, making urgent measures possible to recover what was degraded, in addition to conserving existing areas. However, territorial occupation by communities and human groups in biodiverse areas enables subsequent interaction, resulting in cultural, material and/or immaterial expressions and manifestations of the same, thus contributing to the richness of Brazilian cultural heritage. Thus, understanding the interaction of human communities with our biomes proves to be of high importance for the development of management programs and public policies that understand the depth of the topic, making possible the operation and maintenance of the proposed systems based on the complex dynamics of the life, taking into account both the biological and cultural diversity of biosystems. The present research aims to study Eschweilera ovata (Cambèssedes) Miers, popularly known as biriba. Biriba is a tree species endemic to Brazil, found in the Atlantic Forest, used as a source of raw material for various uses by human groups due to its potential for regrowth by cutting its stems. Often, its main use is related to the manufacture of the berimbau. The berimbau is a monochord musical instrument, originating from African peoples, considered a symbol of Capoeira - a Brazilian cultural manifestation recognized as intangible cultural heritage of humanity, today distributed in around 150 countries. The global practice of capoeira demands an increasing production of berimbaus, inspiring concern about the availability and maintenance of biriba in its natural environment, as well as being “natural” for this cultural expression. The portion of the Atlantic Forest located in the south of Bahia has great biological importance due to the high level of species richness and endemism, being considered by some authors a hot spot within the global hotspot. Currently, as a result of climate change, the region has been affected by extreme precipitation in short periods of time. In this same geographical area we find groups that built their consolidated histories on the practice of capoeira and make use of the berimbau de biriba, available in nearby forest areas. Given the context presented, the development of this work will comprise a systematic review of research carried out with the berimbau and biriba; an ethnobotanical study of the species with berimbau makers from southern Bahia; and the ecophysiological study of the species considering different environmental variables of the same region in the current scenario. It is expected that the result of this work will be a source of knowledge about the biriba, helping in addition to its conservation to safeguard the cultural heritage generated from it.
