SUMMARY:

Changes in taste and smell as sequelae of COVID-19 are a relevant health problem due to their long-lasting nature and the lack of recognized treatments and protocols in order to solve these conditions. Such sensory changes directly affect the quality of life of patients, may influence appetite, food quality and weight recovery, in addition to jeopardizing the safety, through the difficulty of identifying dangerous odors, such as gas leaks and smoke. This whole context is still capable of affecting the self-esteem and mental health of affected patients, contributing to raise depression rates. Given the above, the present study aims to study photobiomodulation as an adjuvant in the treatment of changes in taste and smell resulting from COVID-19. Therefore, the study had the participation of 23 patients, 13 (56.52%) female and 10 (43.48%) male. Ten individuals without complaints of alterations and taste were formed the control group. To the taste and smell alterations were characterized using the Connecticut smell test (CCCRC) and taste test, according to Mueller. The patients were randomly distributed into 4 groups (Oral laser, Nasal laser, Sham and control). Patients in the oral laser and nasal laser groups were treated with laser light, Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT), in the wavelength range of the infrared (IR) with different protocols in 10 clinical sessions, with intervals of 48 hours. In the patients of the Sham group, the application of the laser was simulated without the device emitting light. At the 5th and 10th sessions, new smell and taste assessments were performed. Furthermore, it was carried out saliva collection at the beginning of the treatment, at the 5th and 10th sessions, in order to evaluate the activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO), synthesis of nitric oxide (NO) and production of inflammatory cytokines. With the results obtained, it is expected to correlate the kinetics of the expression of these inflammatory mediators with the clinical responses of changes in taste and smell in patients with post-COVID-19 sequelae.
