SUMMARY:

Tegumentary Leishmaniasis is a non-contagious infectious disease that causes ulcers on the skin and mucous membranes. It is caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania. In Brazil, there are seven species of Leishmania involved in the occurrence of cases of this disease. Thus, the therapeutic treatment is challenging, especially for pregnant and lactating women, children, the elderly, people with chronic diseases and individuals with a depressed immune system. With a drug arsenal consisting mainly of parenteral drugs, and with frequent side effects, the search for therapeutic guidance for this disease, which occurs predominantly in rural areas, is faced with the precariousness of the health structure, especially for the pediatric population. Objective: To carry out a systematic review of the literature to describe the main treatments used in Tegumentary Leishmaniasis in children and their implications. Methodology: This will be a systematic review of the literature on the treatments used in Tegumentary Leishmaniasis in the last ten years. The selection will follow the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), with the acronym PICOS defining the eligibility criteria as children, available treatments, supportive care, relapses and cure.  The electronic search will take place in the following databases: LILACS, MEDLINE, SCIELO and PUBMED, using the Boolean operator AND with the combination of the following descriptors: "leishmaniasis", "treatment" and "childhood". Open studies, review articles, and case reports will be excluded, and only randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials on treatments used for Tegumentary Leishmaniasis in the last ten years will be selected. The quality of evidence classification will be assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system, which is an evidence quality classification system based on defined criteria. The GRADE system comprises four main categories: high, moderate, low, and very low. These categories represent the degree of confidence one can have in estimating the treatment effect. Results: After carrying out the search strategy, all 338 articles were found. A flow diagram (PRISMA) was constructed, taking into account the eligibility criteria, with 43 chosen articles remaining for the study until the due moment. Within this chosen quantity, it was evidenced that Cutaneous Leishmaniasis covers the entire age group, with the pediatric population having a significant percentage. As for the treatment offered, the pentavalent antimonial (Glucantime®) recognized as the main treatment of choice, is being discarded due to its low effectiveness for the pediatric public. It presents irreversible risks for this public, with its range of side effects, mainly cardiac impairment.
