RESUMO:

In the last decades of the 20th century, specifically since the 1970s, tourism activity has developed significantly in Porto Seguro, in the South of Bahia, making the municipality the second most sought after destination in the state. The main reasons for the development of tourism in the city are factors such as the paving of BR-367, as well as the process of patrimonialization and tourism public policies that have produced a hedonized image of the territory, besides the regional migration due to the fall of the cocoa cycle in nearby cities that made the locality to be a promise of future and local development. These events caused changes in the dynamics of the city, resulting in an exponential increase of population and changes in urban space, also reflecting the way of life of its inhabitants. In this context, this research aims to analyze how the practice of tourism in Porto Seguro contributed to the transformations that culminated in the current configuration of the city, be it economic, social, cultural, behavioral and urban, favoring the vision of the local population who participated as well as experienced the unfolding of these changes in their daily lives. The reflection that is attentive to questions related to the specialization of the space dedicated to tourism development and the social, cultural, political and economic effects in the daily life for the residents of tourist cities.
