SUMMARY:

The ethnographic research Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security (SSAN) from Terra Indigena Pataxó Mata Medonha, highlights the traditional food practices of this ethnic group throughout its journey from production, preparation, distribution and consumption of food with emphasis on aspects of Culture. Having Food and Nutrition Sovereignty and Security is having what to eat in an adequate, satisfactory, sustainable, sovereign (autonomous) way and in accordance with cultural habits, and also, with healthy practices for human health and the environment. This understanding expresses the national debate on the subject and is important so that when we think about Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security of Indigenous Peoples, we are not talking about the guarantee of any food. Neither from food outside their food culture, nor from any external action that goes against their decisions for what to produce and eat. Therefore, alongside the sustainability of food systems, that is, the continuous and permanent production of food, the nutritional quality of food free of pesticides or chemical elements that may impact the health of indigenous peoples, traditional food practices are constituents of Sovereignty. and Indigenous Food and Nutrition Security. Through these practices, this ethnography investigates the arrangements in which the act of eating is implied, as well as the perceptions of what is “traditional” for the Pataxó and the meaning for them of having SSAN. It also investigates the impacts caused on food practices by the Pataxó diaspora in 1951, current food practices, as well as symbolic values attributed to foods and foods, ways used to guarantee food according to their culture and access food structures that articulate with the Sovereignty and Food and Nutrition Security of the Village. And therefore, understanding the risks and threats that indigenous people face when they adhere to new food practices, different from traditional ones, and which often result in a homogenized diet (similar flavors), loss of diversity (such as the disappearance of vegetable varieties, roots , grains and seeds) and the threats of hunger and malnutrition.
