The presence of Saint Benedict in Arraial d’Ajuda: Context, devotion and tension
Saint Benedict. Devotion. Arraial d’Ajuda.
Religious devotions are present in several locations in Brazil. In Arraial d’Ajuda, district of Porto Seguro, it is not different. Among the existing ones, there is the cult of Saint Benedict, which is not an exclusive phenomenon in this district; it occurs elsewhere in Brazil. It is a religious and cultural manifestation that receives local variations, and must be analyzed separately and comparatively. Devotion to the black saint is bygone, it was part of the daily life of the Afro-Brazilian population there. In this way, this research aims to analyze the devotion of Saint Benedict in Arraial d’Ajuda, based on the memories of the participants, seeking to investigate what meanings the Saint’s devotees attribute to the devotion over the years. For this, the sources were based on oral history, interviews with devotees, photographs, newspaper articles and bibliographies by local memoirists, including Pinheiro Pucu (1993) and Romeu Fontana (1988). The term devotion is presented throughout this research, this concept will be presented based on the discussion by José Pereira (2003); the transformations of devotion are linked to the district's touristification process, to understand this concept we start from the debate by Margarita Barretto (2001). Based on the surveys highlighted so far, it can be seen that the devotion has been reinventing itself over the years, being a devotion of ethnic affirmation, where it has remained through the perpetuation of some devout families.
