SUMMARY:

The Buranhém River estuary, located in the municipality of Porto Seguro, Bahia (Brazil), is associated with mangrove and reef ecosystems, which are fundamental for maintaining fishing and coastal protection in the region. Trends toward reduced river flow, resulting from climate change, inappropriate water use, and land occupation along the respective watershed, can alter the hydrodynamics in the estuary, influencing processes of saltwater intrusion, pollutant dispersion, and navigability. This study investigated the hydrodynamics of the Buranhém River estuary for the first time, using three-dimensional numerical modeling with Delft3D. Multiple quantitative analyses were applied to validate this tool, comparing it with in situ data. The results showed a robust model, capable of satisfactorily reproducing the hydrodynamics of the system, and applicable to different studies in the estuary. To assess the influence of maximum and minimum river flows on the hydrodynamics of the system, three experiments were conducted using modeling with different flows: one with the minimum average flow (6.6 m³.s-1), another with the average (22.4 m³.s-1), and another with the maximum average (192.8 m³.s-1). This made it possible to describe in detail the circulation pattern of the estuary, as well as the main characteristics that influence hydrodynamics. The results show that river flow, together with tidal action, are the main forces shaping this environment. Analyses of flow variations in the Buranhém River estuary demonstrate its role as a net exporter of water to the adjacent continental shelf. The intensity of this export is strongly controlled by the magnitude of the river discharge, which also accentuates the dominance of ebb currents in terms of intensity and duration, as well as the delay of tidal currents in relation to level variations. Through the Richardson number per layer, it was possible to verify that, under normal conditions, the estuary presents characteristics of a partially mixed environment, with the decrease or increase in river flow being responsible for reducing stratification.
