SUMMARY:

Superheroes in comic book stories have become a reference in shaping principles, as they are present in various media and markets, and make up the imagination of children and adults alike. The analysis of black representations in comics is essential, as using images from the popular imagination can perpetuate or renew values, especially when it comes to stigmatized minorities, who may find elements of acceptance or perpetuation of violence through this discourse. The black representation of superheroes in comics was initially restricted to a hegemonic white view and began without any intention of protagonism, with notable discriminatory traits and loaded racial stereotypes that, instead of helping in the fight against discrimination, reinforced them. Given this, this work seeks to analyze how black representation is developed in superhero comics, considering their constructions, the ideologies presented, the historical context, and the ethnic discourse they engage with, in order to identify the possible contributions of these stories to ethnic-racial education in 21st century Brazil. The methodological approach of the project is qualitative and encompasses three stages: 1) bibliographical survey of works related to black representation in the comic book universe with authors such as Weschenfelder (2013), Silva (2016), and Guerra (2011); 2) dialectical analysis of comic book stories, as advocated by Viana (2016), in order to understand the socio-historical dimensions that compose and construct the fictional universe of titles such as Falcon, Captain America: Sam Wilson, Spider-Man: Miles Morales; 3) execution of thematic workshops with high school students from Stella Matutina State School in Nanuque – MG, to understand the perception and relationship of students regarding the contributions of black representations in superhero comics to the learning of ethnic-racial relations.
